        Plenary Speakers Announced!

The MAPS Planning Committee is pleased to announce the keynote speakers for
the inaugural Midwest Alcohol Policy Conference. These speakers have
extensive experience with addressing alcohol policy and have gained
national recognition for their efforts.

*Jermaine Galloway *

*High in Plain Sight: Current Alcohol Trends and the Relationship of
Underage Drinking and Drug Abuse in College Communities*

Officer Galloway will cover alcohol identifiers, terms, logos, alcoholic
energy drinks, stickers, and non-traditional ways of alcohol consumption,
as well as common access and purchase points. This session will also cover
alcohol and its relationship into the drug world of youth and young adults,
including trends, terms, and common ways drug use is hidden.

* Dr. Bob Brewer *
*Epidemiology and Prevention of Excessive Alcohol Use*

Dr. Brewer will describe the public health impact of excessive alcohol use
– particularly binge drinking, which is a major focus of our work at CDC.
He will also discuss evidence-based strategies for preventing binge
drinking, with a focus on strategies recommended by the Community
Preventive Services Task Force. Dr. Brewer will translate the
recommendations into public health practice, including efforts to build
state public health capacity around alcohol epidemiology.

* Steven Schmidt *

*The State of US Alcohol Regulation*

After prohibition, each state was given the responsibility to regulate
alcohol as it deemed in the best interest of its citizens. Over the past
several years there has been a great deal of discussion and debate to
modify or eliminate aspects of these regulations. This session will
describe the different regulatory structures and the pressures that exist
to change these systems. What many consider to be the most extreme example
of change, Washington State Privatization, and the resultant impacts will
be discussed.

*Dr. David Jernigan & Vincent DeMarco*

*Transforming Public Will For Alcohol Taxes Into Political Power: The
Maryland Model*

Professor David Jernigan and Vinny DeMarco will describe how a broad based
grassroots coalition used a tried and true organizing model to enact the
first alcohol tax increase in Maryland in forty years. They will discuss
their approaches to their successful efforts in Maryland and will empower
