So far this spring we have one male Rufous Hummingbird coming to our
feeder, but no females. Anybody else notice a dearth of female hummers?

I've noticed a dearth of RUHU , all genders. We normally get our Fos RUHU
around the Ides of March. Even without a feeder in place a bird often
appears at the very spot a feeder hung last year. I saw my first RUHU in
Parkdale, Hood River County April 3. There were 3 males at Paul Klindt's
home. I have yet to see a RUHU here on the westside.
Tim Rodenkirk commented on their tardy appearance on the south Coast
this year, coupled with a conspicuous absence in LA. I believe the abundant
rainfall in our southern deserts produced abundant forage this year where
typically it is a desert and best passed over quickly by able bodied birds.
