For anyone as tired of winter as I am, here's a refreshing (I hope) look
back at a pair of newly-minted Oregon Coast peregrines encountered on a
sunny day past, which (until now) nobody but me has ever gotten to
appreciate.
Even when I saw these birds back then — June 2018, when not one but two
fledglings chanced to land on a rocky ledge very near where I was standing
at Yaquina Head — I didn't see them like you see them here. Imaging
technology (esp. video) has improved so much, the footage soon had me
scrambling to learn more about such falconish features as "tomial tooth,"
nasal "tubercles," "mandibular notch" and other details I'd never seen so
clearly before:

But FYI, it was as much for the "interpersonal relationship" I think I saw
blossoming between these siblings that I let this video run a bit longer
than usual. For anyone who might feel that 5.5 minutes is too long to spend
watching peregrines being, well, peregrines, feel free to fast-forward past
the "ordinary" shots of preening and stretching and napping that mark many
birds' repertoire of everyday behavior, and tune back in at about 03:50,
when dad delivers dinner — that's when the real fun begins.
Thanks to another project I'm working on, I was happy to re-discover this
footage in my archives ... and I hope you enjoy it, too.
