I am home on this wet morning looking out my windows and enjoying the birds in
my yard. We continue to have large numbers of Gold and Purple Finches at the
sunflower feeders, along with White Crowned Sparrows, Juncoes, Towhees,
Cowbirds, Redwings, Chickadees, Blackheaded Grosbeaks and this week, ten Band
Tailed Pigeons, who are so beautiful with their purple sheen and yellow bills
and feet.
But what I’m also enjoying are two other summer residents who are not at
the feeder. A Swainson's Thrush, normally so secretive and private in the
woods, is using my wheelbarrow handles in the middle of the yard as a hunting
perch, affording me long and excellent viewing. And a Rufous Humming Bird has
been feeding on my native Red Columbine which I planted last year, which is
very rewarding as well as most enjoyable. There are Violet Green Swallows
nesting in the boxes on my house and Tree Swallows in and on the boxes on poles
out in my back yard.
And now, the sun is coming out ! So much to be thankful for.
