Hello, Friends,
There were 29 households connected to our worship at Langley Hill this morning,
including Jeanne Houghton, visiting for the first time since she moved to a
retirement community in New Hampshire four years ago. It was great to see
everyone, and especially Jeanne.
Following worship and afterthoughts, Friends we heard this News of the
community:
Charlotte Boynton's grandson, Jonathan, celebrated his 5th birthday yesterday
at his grandmother's house, along with his parents and Charlotte's other child,
Tom, and his wife. Altogether, it was a family gathering of 6 people, which is
quite a crowd in these Covid days. Family events like this one, Charlotte said,
are a blessing and a lifeline to staying happy in these trying times.
Georgia Fuller shared information in the "chat" function about a group on
Staten Island in New York trying to protect their island from becoming even
more vulnerable to storms and rising sea levels. For details, including how you
can get involved, contact Georgia.
Susannah Rose is offering handmade jewelry for sale at a new website,
Susannahmakes.com. All proceeds from these sales go to Prisoner Visitation and
Support, a group that sends visitors into Federal and military prisons, often
as the only visitors these inmates have.
Jeanne Houghton thoroughly enjoys living at Kendal at Hanover, New Hampshire.
She said it may be the best retirement community in the country. (Others
thought there were several candidates for that honor.) Jeanne said she is
"about 100%" in a wheelchair these days, which is "pretty much okay" at Kendal.
They have large grounds, so being locked in during the Covid pandemic hasn't
been that much of a hardship. So far, they have not had any cases of the virus.
Announcements
Tim Hunt announced that the Climate Working Group, which usually meets on the
first First Day of the month, won't be meeting today.
Tim also reported that the Meeting's ad hoc Reopening Committee is asking
everyone to respond to a questionnaire Tim posted on the list serve this
morning. It asks Friends to say whether they are ready to come back to in
person worship at the meeting house before the end of the year, and offers
various possible ways that might take place. Please see Tim's email and reply
by Sept. 10th if possible.
Tim also announced our Meeting for Business that will take place next Sunday.
Worship will begin at 10 a.m., as usual, and we will transition to Meeting for
Business at 10:30. Our committees have been very busy over the summer and have
much to report, so the business meeting has a very full agenda. It may continue
past noon to about 12:30, or we may have a continuation of Meeting for Business
the following week, depending on how things go during the meeting.
Our virtual "brown box" accepts financial contributions to support the Meeting
either through PayPal at the Meeting's website or by check mailed to the
meeting house address. Jessica Mott, our treasurer, said non-autogive
contributions were "way down" in July and August, so contributions are very
much needed.
Jessica also announced that she and Keith will be at the meetinghouse tomorrow
morning from 9:30 to 11 weeding and would welcome others to join them. If you
have any doubt about which are the weeds and which are the native plants we
want in our front yard, come join Keith and Jessica tomorrow, who can show you.
In Friendship, and with apologies for misspellings and other mistakes,Rebecca
