Subject: Fwd: URGENT: How you can help win this tax fight today
Comrades,
I know the odds look tough. Corker, Rubio, etc. But I still think we can win.
We've been in dire straits before, and their coalition has cracked.
Here's how we win: by getting 2,000 people into Capitol Hill on Monday, and
generating a wave of enthusiasm and support that grows our numbers on
Tuesday. Unfortunately, it's just a bit too late to bring lots of people from
outside of DC--just too hard to get folks to take time off work and away from
family.
But that's OK. Because there are so many of us in DC--so many people who
dedicate their lives to fighting policies like this tax bill. Like many of
you, I'm a policy wonk: I have clerked in federal court, written legislation,
authored reports. But all the white papers and op-eds cannot stop this tax
bill juggernaut. So now is the time for a different kind of action. We have
to put our bodies into the Capitol, we have to raise our voices, and we have
to resist.
This bill will hurt all of our missions: women's access to health care,
poverty alleviation, protecting ANWR, workers' rights and union rights,
democracy in election, Puerto Ricans lives. And, like usual, it's black and
brown people and poor people who will be hurt the most. It's up to us prevent
this disaster.
Will you join me? I've been working 18-hour days, my body is getting weaker,
I'm losing my voice. I need your help to make my voice louder.
Will your organization commit to bringing a large number of people to the
protest on Monday? We need you there starting around 1 or 2 p.m. and staying
through late night. We will engage in beautiful, lawful action for the
afternoon and evening, climaxing with civil disobedience. And then we will
come back on Tuesday, hopefully with hundreds or thousands of newly inspired
people. I'm asking every DC organization to pledge to bring twice as many
people to the Capitol as you have DC staff. That means as many staff as
possible plus as many friends and family as possible.
Can you please respond to me today with your organizational turnout
commitment? And start hitting the phones and the emails all weekend long?
This can be a major victory for the resistance. (And even if we lose, making
the fight enormous and beautiful will help create a landslide in 2018.) And
best of all, it will be a night you'll remember for the rest of your life.
I know you are all busy with family and work. I know you have real
priorities. But special moments require us to put aside those obligations.
