"Prejudice is a far greater problem than any impairment: discrimination is a bigger obstacle for them to 'overcome' than any disability" ~ Paul Longmore ~ Join the protest !!!!!!!!! Remove people from Woods Services! Thursday September 2nd from 11 a.m. to 1 pm. Corner of Woods Dr and Maple Ave (Rt 213) Near Rt 1 across from Dunkin' Donuts http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=130209913692531&index=1 (Event under Facebook Page) . We can and must change our systems so they are individualized, less costly, and more beneficial to people with disabilities, by providing home and community based services that greatly improve people's quality of life and reduces the likelihood of abuse and neglect. Close Woods Services and places like it, end the institutional bias, and end the abuse! Out of the Woods - Join the campaign on Facebook! A Facebook page and campaign to oppose institutional placements Inspired by the killing of Bryan Nevin's at Woods Services in Langhorne PA http://www.facebook.com/pages/Out-of-the-Woods/115838481800336 (Facebook main page) By now, most of the nation is aware of the death of the young man with autism, Bryan Nevin, at the hands of the institution that was in charge of providing him 24 hour a day safety and care 7 days week. The Woods Services environment and it's culture allowed their employee to leave Bryan locked in a hot van, where he baked to death, unnoticed by the entire staff and center for 5 hours. One has wonder what else goes unnoticed on this 300 acre secluded property? Another death occurred only 8 months earlier, then during investigation a staff member is caught selling cocaine, now another young man sustains injuries and a fractured neck. Woods blames their "clients" for their own injuries!! Kids Together Inc., ALFIE, Vision for Equality, Liberty Resources and other disability organizations and advocates have come together to oppose the on-going institutional biases that force people into these segregated settings under the false pretense that segregating and removing people with disabilities from their homes and community is some how an answer to meeting their needs. How many Bryan's must die and how many other's must suffer because well funded special interests have power and take precedence over the methods of service delivery, putting revenues ahead of putting people first? ------------------------------------------------------------ Pennhrust House of horrors on sacred ground Some of you attended the ceremony to dedicate a historical marker to commemorate the struggle of the people who lived at Pennhurst State School and Hospital, and are familiar with the efforts of the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance (PMPA) to use the buildings for a memorial, a disability history museum, and transformative re-use. A few years ago, a developer bought the property from the Commonwealth, and had not done much with it until recently. PMPA has tried to work with the owner to achieve our goals, to the point of obtaining funding for design work by some of the area's best professionals. The owner has apparently contracted with a purveyor of "haunted attractions" to present a "house of horrors" in four of the old Pennhurst buildings. The event will open September 24 and run through Halloween. Here is a link to the description: http://www.pennhurstasylum.com/mobile.html. The leaders of PMPA have worked heroically to minimize the stigmatizing imagery and damage that "Pennhurst Asylum" does to people with disabilities. But judge for yourself how the attraction describes itself. The disability rights movement needs to oppose the opening of the "Asylum" as stridently and vociferously as it can. (by Judy Gran) More information is on the PMPA website, http://www.preservepennhurst.org/. Close The Pennhurst Haunted Attraction (From Vision for Equality, Inc) Throughout history, individuals with disabilities have been subjected to countless acts of abuse and neglect, including forced sterilization, medical experimentation, imprisonment, isolation and euthanasia. During the 1960s and 1970s, the public became aware of the dismal and inhumane treatment occurring in state institutions like Pennhurst. Outraged by the systemic victimization of people with disabilities, their families and advocates fought to close state institutions and demanded civil rights and inclusion in the community.
