When I see articles like this touting massive range for new battery
chemistries, the article usually fails to mention some really important
information.
For example, how much will it cost relative to current chemistries? How
many charge/discharge cycles can it support before degrading? How easily
(or not) can it be scaled to mass production?
To quote Elon, "Prototypes are easy...mass production is hard."
I'm extremely optimistic about new battery formulas, but one negative
side-effect to articles like these is that they give the general public the
impression that current battery technology is not good enough. As we all
know, for most use cases, the current technology is more than adequate.
I also find it somewhat humorous that the founder of the company said,
"...you are ready for anything the customer asks - a round trip from
Detroit to Chicago..."
I don't know anyone who would make a round trip from Detroit to
Chicago *without
stopping*...so that just proves that we need to do a better job of
educating the customer so that he or she doesn't "ask" that of a battery :-)
