Thought I would pick the brains of the experts here. Right to the question does
anyone on the list here have an outdoor charger? If so is it hard wired in or
is it hooked up to a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Background- I am looking to do some updates at my house in the very near future
and wanted to plan ahead for outdoor charging. The idea is to take away the
Garage door (heating/mice/bugs) and frame it in and replace with French doors
or an oversize door that I could still get my motorcycle in the the garage
space. We do not park in the garage and have never used it for the cars due to
my wife being sensitive to the exhaust and gas smell. I want to get a NEMA
14-50 installed for an outdoor charger for an electric vehicle in the next 1 to
3 years and thought while I had the door replaced and fixed I should have the
NEMA 14-50 ran and installed at the same time. I thought a NEMA 14-50 plug
would allow me the most freedom to choose a EVSE or replace with a different
charger down the road in case tech changes or breaks. Also I could take that
charger if I wanted to to hopefully a detached garage in the future. Has anyone
done an outdoor charger this way at their house? I would like to com
e see what you did.
The other option would be to install the outlet and/or charger inside the
garage which would be great for my motorcycle but not needed. If it was indoors
how would I get the cable out to the EV to charge it in the driveway without
leaving the door open for hours. Here is where I really want to see some
creative solutions. Right now the best I can come up with is a pet door that
has a lockable door flap on it and when I need to charge to run it through the
door. However this would still allow small creatures to get inside the house
and heat/cold to escape. Lets hear those ideas. Thanks!
