Below and attached is detailed information regarding the holiday winter storm
forecast, which pertains to those of you making holiday travel plans. Several
storms are expected to impact Southern Oregon Tues/Weds and again Thurs/Fri.
It’s pretty typical winter weather, however, high winds combined with snow and
more travelers on the road could make driving more dangerous over mountain
passes.
Plan extra travel time, and be sure to stock your vehicle with supplies such as
winter clothing, food, water, batteries and flashlights, and games for the
kids. See the attached guide. For anyone who hasn’t heard my car crash story: I
totaled my vehicle on Highway 58 last February during a snow event. I was
uninjured, but had to wait over 3 hours in 25 degree weather for a tow truck
and a ride home. There were two other accidents in the vicinity that were
higher priority. Luckily I had a giant box of road flares, 15 layers worth of
jackets and snow boots, and a bag of Hershey’s kisses. ☺

Stormy Weather Will Impact Thanksgiving Holiday Travel
Impacts
· Potentially hazardous travel conditions at times in the mountain passes due
to snow, wind, and lower visibilities.
· Strong winds could make high profile vehicles more difficult to control.
· Minor urban street flooding and river flooding are possible near the coast
Thursday and Friday.
· Thunderstorms are possible from the coast inland to I-5 Tuesday night and
Wednesday. Gusty winds, small hail, and brief heavy rain could make driving
difficult.
Forecast Confidence for Tuesday Night into Wednesday
· High for snow levels.
· Medium for snow amounts.
· Medium-high for winds.
Forecast Confidence for Thursday and Friday
· Medium-high for snow levels.
· Low for snow amounts.
· Medium-high for coastal winds.
· Medium for inland winds.
· Low-medium for coastal river flooding.
Timing and Strength for Tuesday Night into Wednesday
· Snow: (See the graphics below for snow and snow levels) Snow levels will
begin near or above 5000 feet early Tuesday evening dropping to near 3000 feet
by Wednesday morning. A winter weather advisory above 4500 feet is in effect
between 4 pm Tuesday and 10 am Wednesday for the Cascades and Siskiyous, and
above 4000 feet for the Mt. Shasta Region.
· Wind: A wind advisory is in effect on Tuesday from noon to 9 pm near Weed in
the Shasta Valley. A wind advisory is also in effect from 3 pm Tuesday through
1 am Wednesday for parts of Klamath, Lake, and Modoc counties. Southerly winds
will increase to 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph.
Weather Summary:
A Pacific cold front will move inland on Tuesday afternoon and evening and then
east of the region by Wednesday morning. This front will bring widespread rain
to the valleys and snow to the mountain passes. For the eastside valleys any
rain will changeover to snow Tuesday night but only minor accumulations are
expected.
A potentially more impressive storm system will impact the region Thursday into
Friday. This storm may bring heavier precipitation and stronger winds to the
region. Coastal river flooding will be possible beginning late Thursday and
Friday.
This active weather pattern continues into the holiday weekend but the
confidence in the details are very low at this time.
