Rotor sails go mainstream with equipment manufacturer collaboration

23 Oct 2019by Craig Jallal

Norsepower, the main provider of rotor sails for commercial vessels, has announced a service co-operation agreement with Wärtsilä – a global provider of smart technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy market

The collaboration with Wärtsilä’s global supplier network has scaled up the service network for Norsepower’s rotor sails, in line with the growth of Norsepower’s manufacturing capacity and the increased global demand for its rotor sails. The news follows the announcement from Norsepower of increased funding.

Norsepower’s chief sales officer, Jukka Kuuskoski said “We are therefore delighted by this partnership and the ability it gives us to support our customers no matter where they are sailing and operating our technology. It also comes at a time when the global shipping industry is looking for proven and economical solutions to reduce their carbon footprint – and our rotor sail continues to be the most attractive, credible choice in wind-assisted propulsion. Servicing both local and international shipowners, Norsepower is dedicated to ensuring a reliable, timely service to its customers, and with the support of Wärtsilä’s global service network, Norsepower will provide a tailor-made service offering to match customer requirements, wherever they may be."

Wärtsilä’s asset management services vice president Stefan Wiik said “The industry is transforming, and we intend to be at the forefront of this change. We are really enthusiastic about this co-operation with Norsepower, which is a great example of our commitment to enabling sustainable societies with smart technology. We are now embarking on an exciting journey together, supporting and promoting sustainable technologies for a cleaner future.”

Since the launch in 2014, Norsepower’s rotor sails have been installed aboard three vessels, including Maersk Pelican, with a fourth to be installed in 2020. The rotor sails have been approved for tankers up to and including VLCC sizes. Norsepower estimated the rotor sails have reduced CO2 output by an estimated 5,000 tonnes.

The rotor sails installed onboard Maersk Pelican have achieved an aggregated total fuel saved between 1 September 2018 to 1 September 2019 of 8.2%. This is equivalent to approximately 1,400 tonnes of CO2. The savings were confirmed by comparing detailed performance information to a baseline established with full scale measurements and computational analysis done for the vessel prior the rotor sail installation.

Norsepower’s rotor sails have been nominated for a number of awards, including the 2016 European Marine Engineering Conference where the awards were backed by Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery magazine. Similarly, innovative products and services in tanker shipping have been nominated for the 2019 Tanker Shipping & Trade Technical Innovation Award. Place your vote for all nominees here.
