[2 minute 30 second video is the meat of this item.

Imagine if such a thing became commercial and widely deployed. How many truck-miles (-kilometres) would be saved, and fuel not burned? Imagine if the mobile version was powered by electricity or biofuels. How much GHG emissions would be eliminated? Then, consider the potential for having a local community 3D-printing facility which could turn out recycled plastic items which are low-quantity production items (typically shipped long distances), or items specific to local practice or events. Or local production of plastic lumber or other construction hardware. So much potential to reduce plastic waste ending up in the environment reducing the need for new virgin plastic to be produced, and reducing tonne-miles of product and packaging transport.]

Plastic recycling: Australian engineers create a 'micro' solution

A micro-recycling factory in Sydney could revolutionise the way old plastics are turned into new materials.

When China stopped taking foreign recyclables two years ago, innovation was needed to deal with the world's plastic problem.

Now engineers in Australia say they have developed a technology to reduce plastic that can fit into a room.

They say the micro-factory ends the need for waste products to be transported over long distances and could lead to much more rubbish being recycled.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Sydney, Australia.
