Once in a while (when I have a couple of minutes), I like the check the
Ontario IESO site to see how we're producing our electricity.
This morning, I captured this data as of 10 a.m.
Nuclear: 8,341 MW
Hydro: 4,168
Wind: 3,655
Natural gas: 335
Solar: 232
Biofuel: 27
Total: 16,758
For Ontario, having 335 MW from natural gas is pretty much having them
running at minimum power, ready for ramp up.
But here's what I found to be of interest. Despite Ontario being
over-invested in nuclear fission generation, at this point in the day,
48% of our electricity was being generated from renewables, and only 2%
from fossil fuels.
If you believe that climate change is a problem, this is an encouraging
sign for Ontario despite our government's lack of a coherent policy on
environment or climate change.
