[karc] Steps to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10

If you wish to upgrade your Windows 7 computer and it does not show the
Windows icon in the right hand side of the status bar you can use the
following steps to upgrade your computer.

Windows 7 to Windows 10 Upgrade Process

1. Check if your Computer meets minimum hardware requirements
at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/windows-10-specifications?OCID=win10_

Minimum requirements are listed here from Microsoft:

Processor:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC

RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit

Hard disk space:
16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS

Graphics card:
DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver

Display:
800x600

2. Back up any files you want to keep

3. If doing a Clean install of Windows 7 (if redoing computer for someone
else) install Win 7 or go to step 5

4. Once Win 7 is finished installing and configuring go to step 5

5. Turn Windows Update ON

6. Use Windows Updater and get all Updates

7. Reboot computer

8. Check to see if Service Pack 1 is installed
Right click on Computer icon (in file explorer) and select Properties.
If Service Pack 1 listed then go to step 14

9. Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)
from Microsoft at
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=5842

10. Place Win7 SP1 file on computer to be upgraded and run the file (it
will take some time)
11. Reboot computer
12. Use Windows Updater and get all updates (This may take a real long
time, it ran overnight on one computer)
13. Reboot the computer

14. If there is no Windows icon in the right of the status bar and there
probably won't be

15. Download the MediaCreationTool (32 bit or 64 bit) from Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10
(This is the Windows 10 Operating system files installer)

16. Run the MediaCreationTool and select Upgrade This PC
(Note you can choose to select create a USB or DVD if you have more than
one computer to upgrade
You will need your Windows Key to use the USB/DVD)

17. Reboot the computer

18. After the upgrade run Windows Updater and get all the latest updates.
19. Reboot the computer

20. You're done!
