Hello all,
It would be great if autopatch was available, but since cell phones, most
repeaters have lost this capability. It is assumed that most places have
cell reception. I don't even have a cell phone since the last time I had an
emergency my cell would not work. I have an APRS status message set-up on
my Kenwood D710 to "request a towtruck" and another for "medical help"
that I can switch to if I am able to in an emergency. Not a great solution,
but I think the ethics of any HAM that receives my request is more reliable
than the cell network in some regions of the province.
Please provide me with an update on this thread if anyone comes up with a
solution. I have been interested in a solution to a similar problem for our
moose hunting camp at mile 58 on the Algoma Central Railway (between Sault
Ste. Marie and Hearst). In the event of an emergency, our camp protocol is
to throw something (a lawn chair, a cooler) on the train tracks since they
legally must stop, then start first aid. There is a radio phone on the
lake, but in the event of something like a heart attack, it is not much of
a decision between starting CPR or going to call for help. I tried APRS
this fall, but could not hit a repeater. On occasion I can hear the
high-rails using a Baofeng since it can receive beyond the HAM bands. I
have thought of trying to set-up a pre-recorded message that would transmit
on a loop over HF (perhaps using PSK31?) that declares a No-Duff emergency
and grid reference with the phone number of the Soo Search and Rescue.
This is still grasping at straws considering there is no electricity
besides a generator. Sending smoke signals and hoping someone calls the
fire department from shore may be more robust. I am very interested in any
other potential solutions!
