This year's theme is "Toward a Common Understanding: Implementing Lesson Study Effectively." Though registration for this conference is full, proceedings will be available for those who are not able to attend but still want to benefit from what will be discussed and learned at the conference. More information on this year's conference can be found at the URL below. http://www.rbs.org/lesson_study/conference/2003/index.shtml RBS REGIONAL CONFERENCE The 2004 Regional Conference of the Mid-Atlantic Eisenhower Consortium at RBS will be held in Philadelphia on January 12-13, 2004. The theme of this conference is "Leaving No Child Behind in Mathematics and Science: Resources to Help All Students Reach High Standards of Achievement." There will be numerous sessions that provide educators with ideas and tools for improving student performance in mathematics, science, and other areas of importance in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act. Registration is $125 for an individual and $100 per person for teams. Early bird registration until November 28, 2003 is $100 for an individual and $75 per person for teams. http://www.rbs.org/conference/2004/ TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE EDUCATION CONFERENCE Held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, PA on March 15-16, 2004, this conference will focus on current technology for use in mathematics and science education. Participants will receive valuable hands-on information on the educational uses of technology, including computers and computer software, basic and graphing calculators, scientific probes, Internet use in planning lessons, Internet use with students in the classroom, developing a classroom Web site, distance learning, and much more. The conference will also examine technology and the NCLB act. http://www.rbs.org/mathsci/states/pa/conference/2004/index.shtml ~~~~~~Nationwide~~~~~~ AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE (AAAS) The AAAS Annual Meeting is taking place in Seattle, WA on February 12-17, 2004. It will offer an interdisciplinary blend of more than 130 symposia; plenary and topical lectures; seminars on nanotechnology, vaccines, and proteomics; the Forum for School Science; poster presentations; career fair; career workshops; and an exhibit hall. A discounted registration fee is available to teachers. For this event, RBS will be organizing a symposium, "What Progress Have We Made in Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning?" http://www.aaas.org/meetings/ ASSOCIATION FOR SUPERVISION AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (ASCD) The annual conference for ASCD will be held on March 20-22, 2004 in New Orleans, LA. This conference offers sessions on many of education's big ideas, including how to link school practices to reducing student achievement gaps, engage and motivate students to excel, improve reading performance, meet the challenges of new policies, support high-quality teaching, apply brain research to practice, and more. http://www.ascd.org NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS (NCTM) The mid-Atlantic region is fortunate to have NCTM's annual meeting in Philadelphia on April 21-24, 2004. The theme is "Defining Mathematics for All." This conference gives mathematics educators the opportunity to meet, mingle, and network with their peers, learn new ideas from the more than 1,000 presentations, and see some of the latest products in the industry. NCTM also offers several workshops that will take place this coming winter and spring. A workshop on data analysis and probability is scheduled in St. Louis, MO on February 26-28, 2004; a geometry workshop will be in Richmond, VA on March 25- 27, 2004; and a workshop on assessment will be held in Cleveland, OH on June 24-26, 2004. http://www.nctm.org/ NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (NSTA) The NSTA National Convention is scheduled for April 1-4, 2004 in Atlanta, GA. In accordance with NSTA's mission to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning, this convention is carefully planned to respond to the changing professional development needs of science educators, especially in this standards-driven era. About 1,500 sessions and 1,100 exhibits will be featured. http://www.nsta.org/ ~~~~~~Delaware~~~~~~ DELAWARE INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE The Delaware Center for Educational Technology is teaming up with the Delaware Library Association to sponsor this next year's Delaware Instructional Technology Conference. It will be held April 28-29, 2004 in Dover, DE, with the theme "Technology and Literacy: A Partnership for Lifelong Learning." http://www.dcet.k12.de.us/ditc/ DELAWARE TEACHER CENTER The Delaware Teacher Center invites any teacher employed by a nonprofit school in Delaware to earn in-service credits at no charge, create free instructional materials, and share and study with fellow teachers. It is offering numerous workshops for teachers, including a rookie secondary science teacher workshop, multimedia presentations for educators, new children's books, and more. http://www.dcet.k12.de.us/teachers/instres/dtc/ THE SCIENCE VAN PROJECT The goal of the Science Van Project is to assist public high school students in meeting the high expectations of the Delaware Science Content Standards by providing professional development for teachers that promotes the use of modern technology and inquiry based instruction. It is sponsoring a 15 contact hour workshop for high school science teachers at the Brighton Suites in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Dates for the workshop are January 23-25, 2004. Activities include updates on the new LoggerPro software, computer activities involving earth science, previews of new high school units, and new physics labs. Projects can be designed for the classroom, laboratory, or field experiences and should be focused to help students make educated choices concerning aquatic resources. Particular emphasis is placed on selecting projects that improve or enhance Maryland's aquatic resources and are strong in student service learning. http://216.144.194.51/announcements.html CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, headquartered in Annapolis, MD, is committed to reducing pollution, improving fisheries, and protecting and restoring natural resources such as wetlands, forests, and underwater grasses. It offers teacher professional development programs for teachers in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. This fall and winter, it will provide a standards-based field study workshop and student action project training workshop. Two NJ ASK Conferences will be held on January 9, 2004 and February 2, 2004. They will include sessions on algebra, geometry, probability, discrete mathematics, and more. A standards-based mathematics curriculum conference is scheduled for February 6, 2004. This will include five standards-based textbooks sessions for Everyday Mathematics, Connected Mathematics, Mathematics-In- Context, Interactive Mathematics Project, and Core-Plus Mathematics Project. The ETTCs contain demonstration technology equipment and offer workshops on computer software programs, the Internet, curriculum integration, assistive technology, and more. Last year, there were 155 attendees, 27 presenters, and nine vendors including Fisher, Science Kit, Arbor, and Glencoe Pub. More information should soon be available at the Web site listed below. http://www.DarylScience.com ~~~~~~Pennsylvania~~~~~~ MASTER OF CHEMISTY EDUCATION The University of Pennsylvania now offers a master of chemistry education degree. This is a new degree program for secondary- level science educators, which contains 10 specially designed courses offered over three consecutive summers and the two intervening academic years. The courses integrate science and pedagogy. The content, materials, and pedagogy are fully aligned with the science standards. An informational open house is scheduled for January 17, 2004. There is a March 1 application deadline for those interested in starting the program in June 2004. http://www.sas.upenn.edu/chem/MCE MONTGOMERY COUNTY INTERMEDIATE UNIT The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit will offer approximately 40 continuing professional education credit courses on a variety of topics this winter and spring. Information about these courses will be online in late November. http://www.mciu.org PENNSYLVANIA SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (PSTA) The PSTA annual convention is at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center, Hershey, PA on December 3-5, 2003. Included at this event will be a leadership dinner and roundtable discussion for science chairpersons, supervisors, administrators, and lead teachers on December 5. Dr. Lawrence Lowery from the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley will be the speaker. His topic is "Inquiry and the Brain: Brain Research in Science Education." http://www.pascience.org/ URBAN ACADEMY The Governor's Academy for Urban Education will be held June 20- 25, 2004 at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA.
