THIS WEEK'S LESSON PLANNING ARTICLE

Celebrate Black History Month
http://www.educationworld.com/a_special/black_history.shtml
Black history and culture is such a part of the American fabric -- and the
school curriculum -- that it's difficult to imagine a time when that wasn't so.
Established as Negro History Week in the 1920's by Carter G. Woodson, February
was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln
were born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black
History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of
African Americans. This Education World archive page links to dozens of
activities for teaching about America's Black History roots. The following
lessons are among those you will find in this archive:

Design a baseball card for an early Negro League player.
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/lesson159.shtml

Explore fabulous firsts in Black History.
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/01-1/lp221_04.shtml

Write a Black History Rap.
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/03/lp297-04.shtml

Examine the growth of the U.S. African-American population.
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/03/lp297-03.shtml

Complete a diagram of the bus on which Rosa Parks rode.
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/03/lp297-02.shtml

And don't miss this most popular of Education World's Black History Month
features:

A Black History Internet Scavenger Hunt!
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/lesson/lesson052.shtml
Send students on a Black History scavenger hunt! Students can learn about
famous black Americans while polishing their Internet surfing skills. Four
different "hunts" -- for students of all ages!
