1. TODAY IN HISTORY

Happy Halloween!

THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN:
http://www.benjerry.com/fun_stuff/holidays/halloween/history/index.cfm

Ben and Jerry's--of ice cream fame--presents this "scoop"
on the history of Halloween, with links for more inten-
sive research, and resources for the Mexican Day of the
Dead holiday as well.

2. RESEARCH AND RESOURCES

NO ORDINARY PUMPKIN!
http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2001/10/102201t_pumpkins.jhtml

Charlie Brown would surely appreciate these giant pump-
kins, though he might have to consider how he could move
a one thousand pound pumpkin in order to enter it into
the great pumpkin fair. Pumpkins are a very serious bus-
iness at these fall festivals, and your students can get
involved by measuring the world's largest pumpkins, es-
timating weights and circumferences of your own class
pumpkins, and linking to spectacular designs for jack-
o-lanterns.

3. ARTS TO CRAFT

LAST MINUTE HALLOWEEN CRAFTS . . .

BLACK CAT HAT:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/halloween/blackcat/

A template is included, and black construction paper, scis-
sors, a stapler, and glue are all that's needed to make this
inventive black cat Halloween hat.

MAKE A MASK:
http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/mardigras/mmasks.htm

If you have some students who forgot their Halloween cos-
tumes today, then copy these templates on to colored con-
struction paper and let your students decorate them with
whatever you have handy--colored glue, glitter, buttons,
feathers... Be sure to have a student parade.

HALLOWEEN HANDPRINT WREATHS:
http://www.dltk-holidays.com/halloween/mhalloweenhands.html

This craft provides a very easy last-minute Halloween ac-
tivity. Students can either trace their hands on colored
construction paper and cut out the patterns, or paint
their hands and make their own (messier--but much more
fun) prints. A template is also available, but individual
handprints make this craft more personal.

PRINTABLE HALLOWEEN CRAFTS:
http://www.benjerry.com/fun_stuff/holidays/halloween/crafts/index.cfm

Select from three printable Halloween crafts to assemble
here, from Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Choose between a
haunted--or simply "Halloween"--house, Glynda the good
witch, or a friendly skeleton.

HALLOWEEN TEMPLATES AND MOBILES:
http://gustown.com/Museum/Crafts/FallCrafts/Mobile.html

Print out copies of these smiling Halloween creatures for
your class to color. Then punch holes at the top, attach
some string at various lengths, and tie them on to sticks,
dowels, coat hangers, or twigs to create Halloween mobiles.

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/books/easy/pumpkinjack/

These printable pages offer both reading and coloring
exercises in a mini format--with a safe Halloween theme--
for early readers.

HALLOWEEN BOOKMARKS:
http://www.allfreecrafts.com/halloween.htm

If you're looking for some last minute Halloween treats
for your students and prefer not to give out an over-
abundance of sugar, then try printing out these Hallow-
een bookmarks on a variety of colored cardstock for an
alternative treat.

HOW MANY -- A PRINTABLE HALLOWEEN BOOK:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/books/howmany/halloween/

How many jack-o-lanterns do you see? Write the numeral
on the page, or try spider webs, or black cats... Find
ten Halloween counting items, along with a cover page,
on this early elementary, printable Halloween math book.

HALLOWEEN RIDDLE COLORING PAGES:
http://www.dltk-holidays.com/halloween/riddles/index.htm

Your students will crack up with these goofy riddles,
