  MIT Closes Music-Sharing Service

MIT CLOSES MUSIC-SHARING SERVICE
Just one week after what its developers thought was a novel and legal
method to share music, an MIT music service has been shut down over
copyright issues. Two graduate students developed the service, which
operated over the university's cable television system. Because the
songs were in analog format, similar to radio transmissions, the
students thought the service would sidestep digital copyright
restrictions, which do not apply to traditional radio broadcasts.
Universal Music Group protested, however, saying that the new music
service violated copyrights and that the university did not have the
right to transmit songs over the service. MIT blamed Loudeye--the
company from which it had purchased the content for the service--for
the confusion, saying that Loudeye claimed it had authorization from
record companies for the songs it sold to MIT. Loudeye said officials
at MIT misunderstood the contract.

LEGAL DOWNLOADS OUTPACE CD PURCHASES
A new report from Billboard magazine shows that online music purchases
have surpassed sales of CD singles. According to the report, 7.7
million songs were purchased online since the end of June, compared to
4 million CD singles. Some argued that these numbers are misleading
because relatively few songs are offered as singles on a disc, whereas
around 500,000 songs are available online from legal music services.
Several online music services are working to provide a legal
alternative to illegal file trading taking place over the Internet.
Phil Quartararo of EMI Music said, "Any way we can drive a consumer to
purchase music as opposed to taking music is a win for the industry."

MICROSOFT WORKS FOR BETTER SEARCHES
Microsoft said this week it will make changes to its search service in
order to be more competitive with search engines from Google, Ask
Jeeves, and Yahoo. Microsoft also said it will end its directory
search
program in January. Robin Kellett, search business manager of MSN
Search U.K. said there remains a lot of room for search engines to
improve in terms of returning relevant results. To that end, the
company is changing its algorithms for the new service, which,
according to Kellett, is currently being developed, though a launch
date was not released.
