Supporters of 321 Studios argued that consumers have a right to make backup copies of legally purchased DVDs, even if they contain copy protections. In her ruling, however, Judge Susan Illston said the legality of the uses of copies was not relevant. At issue, said Illston, was simply the software's violation of copyright law to make the copies. Illston ordered 321 Studios to modify its software so that users cannot make copies of copy-protected DVDs and to remove all versions of its application currently on store shelves. Officials from 321 Studios said they will ask for a stay of Illston's order and will appeal the case. CNET, 20 February 2004 http://news.com.com/2100-1025-5162749.html INTERNET2 COMPLETES ABILENE UPGRADE Internet2 has completed an upgrade to its Abilene network, raising the network's speed to 10 billion bits of information per second. Abilene's capacity for data transfer is four times as fast as it was prior to the upgrade and 15,000 times faster than a typical dial-up connection. According to Internet2, hardware and services for the upgrade were provided by Indiana University, Juniper Networks, and Qwest Communications. In addition to speed increases, the new network is capable of using IPv6, the newest version of the protocol used to transmit information. Officials from Internet2 said researchers are already working on projects that can take advantage of extremely high speeds of data transfer, including a project last year that transferred data from a particle-physics laboratory in Switzerland to the California Institute of Technology at seven billion bits per second. Chronicle of Higher Education, 27 February 2004 (sub. req'd) http://chronicle.com/prm/weekly/v50/i25/25a03002.htm LINUX MOVING TO MORE TYPES OF DEVICES Red Hat Inc. and Wind River Systems Inc. announced this week they will work together to bring Linux operating systems to products beyond servers and personal computers. Wind River makes networking equipment and until now has developed its own operating systems for those devices. Red Hat markets a version of the Linux operating system, primarily for servers. The companies will initially focus on Linux-based software for routers and switches but plan to extend their efforts to consumer electronics. Linux operating systems have already been introduced to devices such as hand-held computers and cell phones. The network will consist of client modems and wireless routers. Management software will allow the components to function as a network that is self-forming, self-healing, and able to load-balance itself, according to Rick Rotondo of MeshNetworks Inc., which developed the mesh technology. The network, which will go live April 2, will initially have about 100 users, including police, fire, and public works personnel. Officials from the city of Medford said they hope to expand the system to cover the 2,800 square miles of Jackson County. They said the system, which cost about $700,000, is expected to start showing a return on investement in about eight months.
