We often think about that time period in terms of peasants & kings, fiefdoms, castles, moats, and almost constant war. Fast forward almost 500 years later to the 1900s and the story of the Holocaust. Both time periods, as well as many others in history, are full of devastation and death to many and the search for total power and control over the remaining populace. Divide the class into several groups. Have each group research a particular aspect of one of the time periods -- medieval times or the Holocaust. These aspects might include the targeted population for persecution, reasons for the attacks, daily life during the time period, jobs, food, and social aspects of the time period. Have the groups share their research information orally with the class, and conclude with the students writing a compare & contrast report about the two time periods. What makes them the similar and/or different? Peer through the lens for a larger-than-life view of human and plant cells; discover how scientists are waging war against cold and flu viruses; take an action-packed tour of the physics of motion; and learn how the pursuit of gold led to the discovery of the periodic table. Airs: Weeks of 4/12/04, 5/17/04, 6/21/04 Monday 4/12/04 THROUGH THE LENS It's been 355 years since the microscope was invented, yet we are still looking through that small lens and seeing the world on a whole new level. Get a larger than life look at human and plant cells. What is DNA, and how much of our life is predetermined by genes? Explore this complex and controversial field. * Cells: Observe how the body repairs itself. Scalding hot water can damage skin cells, but the body can replace damaged cells with new ones. * Discovery Magazine: Genetics: Humans and flies may be more closely related than you ever imagined: so close, in fact, that scientists use flies as proxies for humans to study the genetic component of long-term memory. * Mapping the Human Genome: See how scientists decoded the riddle of human life in the Human Genome Project. Airs: 4/12/04, 5/17/04, 6/21/04 Tuesday 4/13/04 UNDERSTANDING: VIRUSES Even as you read this, your body is under attack. Your enemy is patient, adaptable, potentially deadly, and invisible. Viruses range from the common cold to HIV and have caused epidemics more decimating than war. Segments include the following: * Understanding: Viruses: See how these submicroscopic parasites operate and how your immune system works to defend you. * Fighting Disease: Learn how scientists are waging war against cold and flu viruses. Airs: 4/13/04, 5/18/04, 6/22/04 Wednesday 4/14/04 UNDERSTANDING: BACTERIA Bacteria are truly on the rampage again. They've become immune to the best of our antibiotics, rendering once-treatable infections deadly. However, bacteria do more than make us cringe: Learn how they can be helpful, aiding in meal digestion, air and water pollution control, and even in the treatment of muscle disorders. Segments include the following: * Understanding: Bacteria: Explore our uneasy relationship with these wily microbes, and come away with insights that will give your life science lesson plans a healthy shot in the arm. * Restricted Waters: Learn how scientists are working on ways to reduce the dangers of water pollution. Airs: 4/14/04, 5/19/04, 6/23/04 Thursday 4/15/04 THE PHYSICS OF MOTION Put students in the drivers seat as they learn how to measure speed and distance. This humorous, high-energy road show shows what conditions affect speed. Learn about the wonderful world of applied physics. Segments include the following: * Roller Coaster Physics: Strap in and take some terrifying turns on the scariest amusement park attractions in the world. * Forces and Motion: Students will learn from the pros- high-speed cyclists and sky divers- what they do to maximize velocity, and how shape and air resistance alter speed. * The Planet Electric: The physics of motion extends to the creation of electricity. See how electric generators rely on mechanical motion to create electricity. Airs: 4/15/04, 5/20/04, 6/24/04 Friday 4/16/04 THE ELEMENTS Tempted to snore over the periodic table of elements? Not after poet Roger McGough, in inspired dramatic fashion, traces the evolution of chemistry from the Greeks to present day. Segments include the following: * The Elements: Learn how early scientists turned alchemy into chemistry, ultimately building this new discipline around the periodic table. * Combined Strength: See what happens when elements get together to form composites. Airs: 4/16/04, 5/21/04, 6/25/04 ** NEXT WEEK ON TLC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ** TLC Elementary School airs every Friday at 6:00 a.m. ET/PT, 5:00 a.m. CT, and 4:00 a.m. MT on TLC. http://school.discovery.com/ontv/tlc.html Friday 4/9/04: EXPLORING THE WORLD'S GEOGRAPHY Students experience the unique characteristics of each continent in this wide-ranging overview. Segments include: * Geography of Latin America: Visits one of our closest neighbors to survey its landscapes and climate. * Geography of Europe and Russia: Examines how a small continent supports a relatively large population. * Geography of Africa: Explores the largest continent and its great diversity of physical features. * Geography of Asia and the Pacific: Travels to the land of extremes to investigate how the islands of the Pacific formed. Airs: 4/16/04, 6/11/04 ** More Cable in the Classroom programming ** http://school.discovery.com/ontv/ ************************************************************ ON DISCOVERYSCHOOL.COM ************************************************************ Video Clip Screening Room Get a sneak peek at Discovery Channel School videos.
