(WUSA) -- Up until late last week, the air restrictions were up, above and around Reagan National, BWI Thurgood Marshall, and Dulles Airports. Now only Reagan National remains. A 30 nautical mile radius still remains minus an exception for many grateful pilots at Leesburg Executive Airport. Like at least a half dozen small airports on the outskirts of Washington, the Leesburg Executive Airport has been hit hard financially by the strict no-fly laws which were implemented after 9-11. Students and teachers at the once popular and money making AV-ED Flight School at the airport just off of the Greenway in Loudoun County have struggled just to make ends meet with an invisible odd shaped airspace that was difficult navigate. Now, only a 30 mile radius around Washington remains, just barely including Leesburg, where a special exception was made for pilots who take off and land in what is now known as the Leesburg Maneuvering Area. The lifted air restrictions are expected to keep pursuing fighter jets on the ground and off the tails of arrant pilots of small privately owned planes. FAA officials believe before the changes were made last week, one out of three pilots who violated air space were caught unintentionally heading into areas that posed little or no threat to the homeland. The breaks for local pilots still do not apply to small airports that are located further within the 30 mile radius around Washington. That means officials with airports in College Park and Gaithersburg are still holding out hope that invisible circle above Washington will soon shrink in half one day soon. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
