I looked at that and it has only two problems: 1. The classic cnet shuffle where the reviewer gives it two thumbs up, = whereas all the posters give it two thumbs down "it ate my computer" = Software can be dangerous and there is no tech support. 2. The description in the review does not state it supervises installs = so it knows what it is doing. Software not suited to proposed purpose. If you want freeware, arguably the best place to start is = Pricelessware, = "The best of the best in Freeware - selected by alt.comp.freeware = participants" and at http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007SYSTEMUTILITIES.php#4. 01Install-UninstallTool = we find ----- Install-Uninstall Tool Total Uninstall (v 2.35) Company: -- Author: Gavrila Martau (Gabi) (Freeware) LFW (v 2.35) http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/util/uninst.html Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP = Languages: English and many other languages = Description: Total Uninstall can help you to monitor any changes that = were made to your system during installation of a new software product = and allow you to perform a complete uninstall without having to rely on = = the supplied uninstall program (which may leave files or changes = behind). To use it, you simply launch the installation program from the = = Total Uninstall interface and select the system areas to be monitored. = The program will then create a snapshot of your system before it = installs the new software and an additional snapshot after install = completes. It then compares the two snapshots and displays all changes = in a graphical tree view, marking all values and/or files that have = been added or changed as well as some before/after details. Total = Uninstall will save these changes and if you decide to uninstall the = application, it will reverse all changes to the previous state. = Program description; download: = v 2.35 (2005-02-15) = [ tun235.zip (684 KB)] = http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/util/uninst.html = alternate (direct) download: = http://digilander.libero.it/molearchive3/tun235.zip = Home Page (Sware): = http://www.martau.com/ = (desc. rev.: 2007-03-15) desc.link ACF participants notes and review = = comments PL2007-CD files: n/a ----- And techsupportalert which is a single individual who [has a free and = valuable newsletter and] has gained a reputation of searching, = investigating, testing, explaining, and recommending software and = solutions agrees with the above, noting that Total Uninstall (v 2.35) = is the last freeware version of a capable pay software. His link [4] is = = dead [you can google others], but his discussion about "uninstallers" = may be instructive: ----- at http://www.techsupportalert.com/more/extended.htm he states: Best Free Program Un-installer Updated December 19, 2006 This group of programs has two sub classes: Windows uninstaller = replacements and application uninstallers. The Windows Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel constantly = annoys users with its limitations. MyUninstaller [1] is a free program = that works just like the Windows Add or Remove Programs applet but is a = = more capable product than the Windows version. It gives you much more = information about each installed program including product name, = company, version, uninstall string, installation folder and Windows = Registry details. It also allows you to delete orphaned and obsolete = entries from the list as well as the ability to save a list of all = installed applications into a text file or HTML. My favorite feature = though is the ability to sort programs by the date installed which is = great for quickly uninstalling programs you are just trying out. As no = = installation is required, it can be run from a CD or USB drive which = makes it an excellent addition to your diagnostic toolkit. = An alternative to MyUninstaller that offers similar functionality is = Safarp [2], a free Open Source program. It's great strength is its = speed - it loads in a flash. Safarp can be be run as a stand alone = program or installed and integrated into the Control Panel. = MyUninstaller [3] is a free utility from Microsoft that supplements = rather than replaces the Windows Add/Remove Programs applet It cleans = up dead entries in the Windows Add/Remove programs panel and tidies up = the corresponding Windows uninstaller registry entries. = None of these programs can of course, remove leftover registry entries, = = DLLs and files that belong to defunct programs. To do this you need an = application uninstaller i.e. a program that monitors the original = install so that it can work out exactly what changes are made during = installation. = The only free program I'm aware of that does monitored installs and = uninstalls is the last free version of the commercial product Total = Uninstall 2 which is still available from some download sites [4]. It = doesn't offer the impressive features of the latest commercial version = but is quite capable. Somewhat less less capable is InstallWatch [5], a former commercial = utility that is now offered for free. It logs the registry and file = changes made when you install software and hardware but unlike Total = Uninstall, it cannot automatically uninstall products. None-the-less it = = is a handy utility to have in your toolkit. Finally, you might consider a program like Quick Clean. Once installed, it watches which program files go where and can remove unneeded files for you.
