Hi, I'm using the original version of Juno webmail (MegaMail) not the "new
Juno Message Center." I receive messages with strange characters in them all

Those sort of strange characters appear when someone is trying to
read a non-ASCII text (such as can be generated by MS Word) using
an ASCII text reader (such as MS Notepad). The strange characters
are indicators of things that are not available within the standard
ASCII range, such as hyperlink characters, Bold or Italic
emphasis. Once your correspondant opens such a document
in a reader that can't handle the special characters, and forwards
the result to you, your reader will show the strange characters,
even if you own reader normally would be OK with Bold, Italic and hypertext
(blue characters indicating a Web link).
If your correspondent's mail program is set to send text as ASCII
only, it would have the same effect on forwarded HTML messages.
You could also get the same effect by setting your own text reader to display
ASCII only, and opening a word processor document
where the original text had Bold, Italic or hypertext characters.
ASCII is the plain-vanilla character set that can be generated
by a standard keyboard (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).
HTML has an expanded character set that has more
features, intended to be read in a browser or a more modern type
of text editor (HyperText Markup Language).
