Hi U-1634, and All,

I've set up a series of filters (Mail Assistants) with several moving
mail to the Incoming folders. The filters basically consist of two parts;
a "condition" and an "action" you want to take place when the condition
is met. For example, I have Juno_accmail List mail move to my
Junoaccmail folder. The condition I use is "if the subject contains JA"
then "move" the message to my Junoaccmail folder. I have similar filters
set for messages "from" certain people, other mailing lists and
newsletters, etc.

You should also note that the filters operate in an "orderly" manner. A
newly retrieved message will be compared to the first filter in the list
first. If it meets a condition set (and you can have more than one
condition set per filter) then the associated action is taken. If not,
the message is compared to the second condition and so on.

Hopefully by the time a message has run the gauntlet of my first 6 or 8
filters if it's a message I'm interested in it's been moved to either my
Incoming folder or one of several special folders I've set up for my
personal ease of use. These include all personal mail from family and
friends, mailing lists, etc.

So now what to do with the remainder? I have a filter set up to move all
messages addressed, not to just me, but to multiple recipients to my Junk
Mail folder for further manual review - before Deleting. Just in case a
mailing list or newsletter, something like that slips through. You may
need to add another one or two in this area to stop a piece or two of
good mail from ending up in your Junk Mail folder, but you can refine
these for you own needs.

You should also note another feature that can be set for each Mail
Assistant. For each Mail Assistant you set up, you can set it so once a
filter has acted on a message that all further filtering ceases or you
can have following filters in your list also act on the same message. I
use this as I near the bottom of the messages that haven't been moved to
another folder. I use a filter, probably the one you're asking about to
move any remaining mail to my Incoming folder, but then CONTINUE to run
the remaining filters.

The filter I use to move the remaining mail to Incoming rather than go on
to the Inbox is a series of conditions. Basically there are two sets...
one is "if the subject contains an a ", then "move" it to the Incoming
folder, or "if the subject contains an e ", "move" it to the Incoming
folder, same for "i", "o", "u" and "y"... the second set does the same
thing for the body of the message, "if the text contains a ", etc. Note
this is all done is just one Mail Assistant. And be sure to check the
box to "Continue" applying the remaining filters.

I have one or two more filters in my list that also act on these last few
messages. One gets rid of messages I'm quite certain are spam. For
example, not many of my friends send messages with "judicial judgements"
in the subject, so those get deleted. Along with Viagra, mortgage rates,
etc... the common ones or trendy spam. And finally I have messages not
addressed directly to me in either the To: or Cc: box moved to my Junk
Mail filter for a manual review every now and again.

Occasionally I'll end up with a piece of junk mail that finds it's way
into my Incoming folder, but Juno never automatically opens one for me.
I can usually tell from the From and Subject lines whether or not I want
to open it or deep six it. If it's suspicious in any way I'll highlight
a known good message that I'm going to (or at least can) delete then
using the CTRL key, highlight the suspicious message and delete them
both. Keeps me from opening a virus containing message by mistake.

The way you set up your Mail Assistants will undoubtedly vary, but I've
found the above to work pretty well for me. Once or twice a week, I scan
the Headers box for my Junk Mail filter and manually delete the piles of
spam that have accumulated there all at one time. Moving any "good"
messages back to my Incoming folder and adjusting my filters as
appropriate.

George Lunt ..... so. cal.
