Heh, heh. It depends.

Sometimes a jet may be just doing ILS runs and so it's best if they can whip
round quickly for another one. It is not uncommon to see the behaviour you
witnessed - a go around followed by a quick circuit to get back onto final.

I remember sitting on top of Helsby Hill watching a 737 doing circuits at
Liverpool once for over an hour. He was turning final at about 4 miles -
obviously a rookie <g>
