[jhb] Thunderbird Problem

It's turning out to be one of those days!
I've been trying to get to one of my discarded emails, in Thunderbird's
Trash folder, to send a reply. Every time I try to access the Trash
folder Thunderbird hangs. All the other folders are OK. It's shown as
having 1095 messages, so it may be getting constipated. Is there a way
of emptying the Trash section externally, since I obviously can't get at
it through the running programme?
