You can see why I've had Matrox cards since my first PC. I really regret
them dropping out of the games market and this 8800 is going to be somewhat
of an eye opener to me.

Mine also arrived today along with the mobo but the rest of the kit is still
on its way. Without a case, memory and hard drives the 8800 will have to sit
in its box for now. Having mentioned the size of it I thought I wouldn't be
surprised when I opened the box but it's a staggering beast of a card. What
I may notice the most is the jump from 128Mb of graphics memory to 768Mb
<g>..

Subject: [jhb] Superb Matrox Service

It's been a long day!

The new 8800GTX arrived today. It's a monster and I could only get it
into the case by removing one of the SATA drives, then bodging up a new
way of locating it, with the card having invaded its space.

Next came the trauma of new drivers.

After that the Desk Top insisted on going to a monitor it didn't oughter.

Eventually it all seemed to be running, with three THTG monitors plus
the other two.

From then on it went seriously downhill. Both FS9 and FSX, when booted
up, brought the system to its knees. It was almost impossible to move
the mouse cursor, with each move followed by a two second pause. With
FS9 running I was getting 0.6 fps! If I took FS off screen it was OK again.

Eventually I narrowed it down, without finding a solution. If I ran with
THTG set at 1280 x 1024, so just one screen, all was normal. As soon as
I corrected it to the usual 3840 x 1024 it ground to a halt. In the case
of FS9 i could get it to work by reducing the resolution, then
increasing it again. With FSX this had no effect.

Eventually, having tried several ideas suggested by Tom, I emailed
Matrox; getting in early for tomorrow. This was about 2100. Within a
couple of minutes I had a reply suggesting it might be the 8800 drivers.
A few minutes later they came back with another idea. It was one most of
us have used but it didn't occur to me today, 'cos I was trying to be
logical!
They suggested the old dodge; re name FS9.cfg and re boot FS9. That did
the trick. Naturally, it then became obvious..... Both FS9 and FSX had
picked up the new Device and added it to the .cfg. It's just a pity
Microsoft have never twigged that if you change cards the .cfg just
builds up a collection of devices, which the programme can't cope with.

So. it's up and running. But only because of the unbelievable Matrox
backup. Particularly since they have officially got out of games and
home computing, to concentrate on the business world. Because the
traders work round the clock, Matrox run a 24 hour technical backup
service. Being the blokes they are, whenever I've put in a non business
query, they've come back within minutes. You can't normally buy service
like that. It almost takes me out of GOM mode......
