latest jaws and an alva 380 braille display connected to laptop without serial connector

I have a windows vista machine. It is a laptop without a serial connection. I
connect using a serial to usb converter. I was using a Braille x and had no
problems. Now, I want to use the alva. I try to set the correct port in jaws
but all I get is auto. Jaws then says that auto isn't a valid port. Any ideas
on how I can get this to work?
