In JFW 5.0, there is an option pertaining to repeated characters that may be at work in your case. This option takes precedent over your punctuation setting. You can set it to read the first 3, 4, 5, or 6 characters, or you can set it simply to count the repeated characters without saying them. Unfortunately, I saw no option to ignore repeated characters. If you set JFW to count repeated characters, it will say, for example, "7 periods" when encountering 7 periods in a row, such as: ....... This setting can be annoying in certain contexts.
