Well, the first thing that comes to mind is a free program called Skype.
www.skype.com
You use a microphone and headset to talk to one another. It's a computer to
computer program, so the sound is clearer than some of these online chat
providers.
You also may want to look into some of the 1010 phone number providers.
Some of those can be quite reasonable even for international calls.
