does this mean I have to upgrade windows live messenger?

I tried to sine in to window live messenger today and got asked for my
display name. Once I put that in messenger just sat there for a couple
of minutes and then it told me it was unable to sign me in and to
check the network status or something, I can’t remember the exact
wording.
Does anyone know if this means I need to upgrade or is there some sort
of other problem.
I’m running windows XP and jaws 10.
