desktop showing in running apps

This is happening a lot lately and rebooting seems to be the only way to get
rid of this. If there are a few programs open and I'm trying to alt-tab
between them, there will invariably be a blank spot where Jaws does not
mention the name of the program. So when I hit insert f10 to see what the
running applications are, it says "desktop" as one of them. My display
settings seem right so I don't know why I get this blank spot while
alt-tabbing. I hope someone can help.
