Just jumping into the middle of this thread with a few comments. most small business versions of m s office sell for 99 dollars are usually o e m versions for those buying a new system. some vendors will sell them no matter what, but realize student versions and o e m software have zero technical support. also the price of the student version depends on the university. Here it cost 5 dollars. realize they pay for it else where in other student fees. so the university is paying the differance. so the students are limitted to buying just one copy of each version. the copy they usually want to keep for them selves is the newest release. one more thing, one guy on this list said he preferred office 2003 because he felt power point in that release was better. Not tested it my self. need to grab office 2003 first. so not sure if that guy was comparing power point access in office 2002 or in office 2000 versus the newest release office 2003. office 2000 power point was very accessable. Some additional comments. you all heard of active accessability. m s brain child for access. well jfw ability to out do the competition in reading m s office depends on the fact jfw intercepts information from the dom layer of office and not through active access ability. the other screen reader companies have been bitching at m s for not making this information available through active accessability. In other words m s is not supporting their own active accessability in office and yet they preach to others that they should support active accessability in their applications. weather office 2003 offers screen readers more info via active accessability i do not know. If it does it would be a good thing because it would be easier to get to the info in a less costly method. just pointing out that pressure is their on m s from other screenr eader companies. as a result that means office it self may in the future become more accessable to screen readers with support for active accessability. It may also mean office 2003 may have better access than the previous release. realize m s works more through gradual changes slightly improving each version toward access than radical changes. side note the next release of window eyes will support office. realize one more point, having access to the info, and having the spiffy scripts are 2 totally differant things. corporations are totally differant creatures when it comes to buying software. their not like end users. they often wait a year for a service pack before considering the purchase. as a result jfw is going to be scripted for the version of office that is the most main streemed version. so your best scripting support for office is probably for office 2000 and office 2002. this is one reason I have not moved toward office 2003. I will do so shortly, but realize I have more than one computer so i am not giving up my previous office to do so. translation, i will probably still use the previous version most of the time. In addition the next release of jfw may offer better scripting support for office 2003. If you note those on this list teaching office you will notice most of them have not yet moved into office 2003. not because of the expense, but more so due to the fact it probably needs work on the scripts and the fact most businesses are not using office 2003 yet. my last point buying new can lead to a catch 22. its possible to have a more accessable version of office but with junky scripts not being as easy to use. the scripts do much to enhance the experience for the end user. so lets say you mainly only use word. for school papers. then office 2003 may be a good choice for you. you should have a time frame longenough to exist for the jfw scripts to catch up before you need the more advance stuff. pullman makes a good point, if employment is not your end goal then you may not need office at all. if employment is your goal how ever the learning curve for blind folks on this stuff is longer. so its best to get a head start. bill p s note above I say probably with respect to jfw scripts for office 2003, thats based more on past history because as i have noted not tried office 2003 yet my self. With all previous office releases their was a lag in time before the scripts got really good. -- To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
