can't hear progress announcements

Hey guys, I've been trying to figure out why I don't hear any progress
announcements while loading web pages or installing or downloading software.
I'm running jfw6.2, and I set the progress announcements feature to "all" in
the user options of the config manager. As always, any help is appreciated.
