I did some more messing around and discovered that turning off Mixed Case
Processing in text processing stopped Eloquence from saying apostrophe if it
was at the beginning of a line when a word started with a capital letter.

I forget who suggested text processing but want to thank who ever that was now.

Bob

  Robert:

It depends whether the file contains hard returns at the end of each line,
for example in a .txt document.

However, if the file is in a word processor format, the only problems you
should have are when the apostrophe is the first character immediately
following a hard page break or a hard return or, if the apostrophe follows a
punctuation or space character and is then followed immediately by a hard
return or hard page break.

Don't forget that soft returns in a word processor document can be
interpreted as space characters as explained in the examples listed in my
previous email.

Hi Dave. That is really great! Thanks. Do you think it could also be
used with carriage returns for apostrophes that start at the beginning of a
line or are at the end of a line?

In the Dictionary Manager, you will have to enter several entries, such
as:

The following examples are for the apostrophe as it represents an open
single quotation mark.

      Actual Word:

      space character apostrophe character

      Replacement Word:

space Character double quote character. (If that does not work, enter
the word quote instead)

Use the above replacement example to change left square bracket
apostrophe and left parenthesis apostrophe

The following examples are for the apostrophe as it represents a close
single quotation mark.

      Actual Word:

      apostrophe character space character

      Replacement Word:

Double quote character (or the word quote) space character

Use the above replacement example to change apostrophe comma, apostrophe
period, apostrophe question mark, apostrophe exclamation mark, apostrophe right
square bracket and apostrophe right parenthesis.

Yes. I did try that but it made words with apostrophes sound strange
like don t and can t.

        Thanks for the idea.

I just don't understand why this is still a problem. So many editors
have "smart quotes" that seem to make apostrophes instead of quote marks.

I tried all the punctuation levels in jaws but can't shut them up.

You could use the jaws dictionary to change apostrophe to quote, but
then you would never hear apostrophe.

My favourite voice is Eloquence. When I read some scanned books,
they have apostrophes instead of quotes. How do I get Jaws to stop saying
apostrophe when there is a quotation? It drives me nuts!

I tried setting punctuation levels but it doesn't stop apostrophes
being spoken when they are used instead of quotes.
