What is macromedia flash?

As this thread has gone on, several listers have answered the question of
how to turn Macromedia Flash off; and at least one comment of why you might
want to do so, but no one has answered my basic question (albeit perhaps too
basic) of what macromedia Flash is. If that's too basic for this list,
would someone pleease let me know off list?

Thanks.

Take care...
