First off a bit of background, I'm a sysadmin for a group that develops web applications. I do the tech support for the other members of my group and some of them use Windows, others use MacOS and one even uses Linux. My main computer is a Macintosh iMac which has an Intel processor. I use virtualization so I don't need to have 3 or 4 separate computers on my desk when I'm asked to troubleshoot a particular problem on a particular OS. I also use one of my virtual machines to run software for managing our servers that is not available for the Macintosh OS.

Parallels Desktop, Apple's BootCamp, VMWare's Fusion, and Sun's VirtualBox are all Macintosh applications that can give you a virtual environment in which you can run other computer operating systems like Windows XP or Linux. These extra OSes are called virtual machines or sometimes guest OSes. Sun has a page that describes Virtualization a bit better at
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Virtualization .

I suspect we've moved off topic for this list, but I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have off list.

This is all very interesting and rather intriguing... so are you using a Mac or a PC? What's a virtual Mac environment or whatever you call it? Can you explain this whole setup a little?
Thanks,

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately, the fix was to not use Parallels but to use VMWare's
Fusion instead. It worked first try. Academic price for Fusion is $40
so that was definitely affordable for me.
