I've said before, though probably not here: As I know GW Micro was working with Skype at one point, and as I try to make my accessibility improvement requests compatible with more than just JAWS, the loss of Window-Eyes compatibility from 1.4 to 1.5 truly stunned me. I have heard this from several people, but as yet I don't know just what caused it to happen. I hope Skype becomes fully accessible to users of all major screen readers and to JAWS users without scripts. I'm afraid my expertise is almost exclusively with JAWS though, so that's all I can test and work with directly. With window eyes 5.5 you get no access to the contact list what so ever so if you are using both stay with 1.4.78 If you are just using jaws go ahead and update. Note the new sounds suck though. Just my observations. If you are using the skype api with miranda and jaws you may continue to do this. This might be a good work around for window eyes users and the miranda contact list reads just fine using window eyes. I can only speak for my experiences. I just downloaded the latest release of Skype. This is not a beta, but a full release. The contact list works very impressively with JAWS. When you launch the program, you are immediately placed into the contact window. Hitting the tab key puts you into the edit box for entering a phone number, then tab again places you back n the contact list. The contact list will give you the status of the person highlighted: online, offline, offline with call forwarding, etc. You can hit enter to immediately call that person, or you can use your application key for contact-related options. Unfortunately, this version of Skype does not offer the same (or, by my findings, any) contact list functionality with Window-Eyes. I should also add that I do not have any JAWS scripts installed.
