Laura, you can't view the profile unless they have their security settings set up that way, to allow non-friends to view it. So unless you have someone there to look at their picture or their location is displayed and you are pretty sure they are the Joe Smith they say they are, you'll have to add them and hope it's your friend and not someone with the same name.
