Dave,
I would certainly like to hear from Mac users who perform office work with their computers. The last time I asked Mac users about Microsoft Office and Voiceover, it was a no go. Are there accessible applications on the Mac that are fully compatible with MS Office applications? If not, I would have to stay with JAWS or another major screen reader if I were doing office work and needed to share files with colleagues.

Gary,

Good point. However I'll bet there are more than a few MAC users who would
take umbrage with your assessment of Apple's slant toward games, browsing,
music, etc.

Let's see what happens.

Oh, and I'd not take seriously the good preacher who made that prediction.
We'll just have to wait until he predicts and gets it right. In the meantime
I'll just keep buying lottery tickets.

If you are at home playing on the Internet, reading email, playing music in iTunes and such, you could probably dump JAWS and your Windows computer and
go with a Mac and Voiceover. You may even do well if you are working for
yourself and can pick from the software that is accessible with Voiceover on
the Mac. However, if you are seeking public employment, you most likely
will be using a computer running Windows and will need one of the major
screen readers to be productive in a job.

I've listened to a number of podcasts about the Mac and Voiceover, but I
haven't heard any that deal with office work, doing complex word processing or working with spreadsheets. If you know of any such demonstrations of the
Mac doing this type of work, let me know.

Since I'm happily retired, I could probably make the switch to a Mac and
leave Windows and expensive screen readers behind, but if I wanted to be
employed in most of the available jobs using a computer, I don't think I'd
be doing any switching until Apple can claim more than 50 percent of the
computers in use. That seems to me to be about as likely as the next
prediction of the end of the world coming true.

My SMA has ran out now, so I'm not bothering to pay for another pair of
eyes
for the pc. I say the company initials A all the way very soon. Goodbye
Microsoft and good riddance Freedom SF.
I'm still staying around on the list though so I can help/advise those who
are still using jaws.

Dear Dave,
Well, I hear you, and you are absolutely correct!

Yes, I skipped Version 10 also, well I mean I threw the unopened CD mailer
into a box on top of my closet!
LOL!

I liked Version 9 fine, and to be honest, I have not had a bit of
problems
with Version 11.

Thanks again!

Alan,

You'll likely wait until you're in a pine box if you hope to get the bugs
out. Cynically speaking (as I'm always reluctant to do) each new version
will have new bugs and some old bugs remaining, ad infinitum .

And in case you're not aware, failure to renew an SMA before a major
version
comes out will cost you a whole heck of a lot more money. I'll let other
chime in on their experience. My advice is to purchase the SMA for 12 and
13
and wait for 13. I skipped version 10, for example, as it made me ill.

Dear Kenny,
Thanks very much for that kind offer, but I only have JAWS 11.

I suppose I need to look at getting JAWS 12, but since I do not have any
more SMA's, and I am hoping they will get all the bugs out of that
version
before I purchase it, well I will wait a bit more!
Besides, I understand that the "virtual ribbon" is not a total "fix", it
only helps out a bit, is that correct?

Wow, I have been using the JAWS Menu bars since 1999, with JAWS 3.3!

And although I feel I am making a little progress getting the hang of it,
I
see it will be a slow learning curb!
A completely different thing!

Thanks again!

Hi allan The virtual ribbon is a jaws 12 feature. To turn it on in jaws
12
You go to the setttings center. If you like I can connect to your
computer
through jaws tandom and activate the feature for you.
