Yes the messages will varry but the principle is basically the same. the 
shortcut on the desktop is just that, a shortcut. If you delete it you 
haven't uninstalled or deleted the program. Don't let what the message says 
get you.
Try it yourself and you'll see. In other words, delete an icon from your 
desktop and send it to the recycle bin. You'll see that you are still able 
to access it via the start menu and under programs it'll still be there.
