The author might not, but if it is an established publisher they should know about accessiblity. If not, I would just honestly explain to the bookseller the problem. Ask if you can download it and try it and if your screen reader can't read it, ask if you can get your money back? Of course, they have to trust you won't make copies of the file before you send it back, but what have you got to lose? Or you can take the other approach and buy the book and if you can't access it, write them and nag them until they give you your money back, smile.
