The microsoft antispywaere program was incorrectly flagging the msgplus.exe file as being malware, which is incorrect. The developer of messenger plus! wroteup a long article about it explaining everything. So when you install messenger plus, you must make a choice as to wether or not to install the sponsor program. Most people I know choose not to install it though. so messenger plus *is* safe to install as long as you don't install the sponsor program.
see
http://www.msgplus.net
for more information about the microsoft antispyware program incorrectly flagging messenger plus as spyware.

you can choose not to install the sponsor program. it's not something that you must do in order to install messenger plus.
