MIRC and Jaws 9

Greetings, fellow Listers,
I've downloaded MIRC and am eager to participate in one of these chat
forums. I have DSLand MIRC is installed on my computer. But when I boot up
the program, nothing comes up. I expect the whole continuum of IRC channels
to present themselves but I'm getting nothing. Could someone sort of walk
me through? Also, how manageable is something like mIRC with a screen
reader? Is it generally easy to follow what's going on, or is the user of
screen readers always left in the dust?
