I use sygate, it is thorough and updates are for viruses etc. I don't think there is much more that a firewall can do--how many ports are involved and if they are all closed except the ones you obviously wish to use, http 80, 110 for pop, etc. then? What do updates actually do to a firewall other than try and catch spyware which should be the job of another piece of software like spybots with it's ttimer program which watches your computer for just such intrusions? :)
