The first bit of your posting sounds like the AutoCorrect option for borders has been switched on within Word, although when you say that none of the shifted numbers produce anything, that doesn't fit this scenario. I'll run through it anyway, because it may be of use to others. The AutoCorrect borders feature allows you to create borders around a paragraph by typing three characters on their own as a paragraph. I've only been able to use asterisks, hyphens, underscores and equal signs to create borders in this way. The way it works is if you press Enter to move to a new paragraph, then type three asterisks with no spaces between them and then press Enter again, the three asterisks are replaced with a border. To see if the AutoCorrect option is on, go to the Tools menu and choose AutoCorrect. Press Control + Tab to move to the second page. How you navigate the page depends on your version of Word; on Word 97 and 2000 you can tab around until you get to a checkbox with the word "borders" in the label, while in Word 2003 you DownArrow until you get to the checkbox. I don't have Word 2002 so I can't say what happens there. If the item is checked, the feature is active. If you want to check whether a paragraph has borders, the JAWS keystroke Alt + Shift + B will tell you. Beware, though that the borders feature outlined above is peculiar in exactly how it applies the borders. I won't go into more detail unless there is an interest. Steve -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Friday, 29 July 2005 22:34 To: JFW List Subject: Jaws not speaking normal characters, suddenly I'm working in a Word document and decided to mark the division between sections of the piece I'm writing by typing three asterisks (stars)at certain points. I've used this character for similar purposes often,. But this time, even though if I set Jaws to echo my typing by character, I hear the stars being typed, I can't find them afterward. Jaws is silent, as if I'd typed nothing on that line. I tried another couple of such characters, just out of curiosity. Like the dollar sign and the number sign. Same thing happened. Now, on all these keys-- 3, 4, etc.-- the numbers appear for Jaws after I type them. But not the characters produced by pressing the shift key with them. I'm using Jaws 6.0. Could this be some sort of glitch in this version? Or could I have inadvertently set something in an area of Configuration Manager that would silence these characters, without knowing it, so I don't know what to look for and reset? Thanks to anyone who recognizes this problem and can point me toward a solution. It's really inconvenient not to be able to type these ordinary characters and hear them with Jaws. I'm sure they're visible, so that isn't what I'm wondering. I want to know why Jaws is ignoring them, once they've been typed. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
