Jaws and yahoo messenger not reading message window content

Hi, I just downloaded the latest version of yahoo messenger, and I
have the latest version of Jaws. I am trying to message a friend on yahoo,
and when I try to read the message window by using alt 1, it says, "you must
be in the chat window to read this message." It also is not reading what
they or I say automatically. What could be my issue?
