Hello Stacey,
In working on a desktop with Jaws, have you ever tried using first key
navigation?
Another words, if you are looking for My Documents, you can just press
the letter M when on the desktop.  This will cycle you through each
item that starts with the letter M until you get to the one you want.
This is how I navigate on the desktop, and I find it very quick and
efficient.
