That's nicely put. A very basic way of looking at it is that the insert-3 pass-through key allows the JAWS user to follow with a key combination built into the non-JAWS application that would otherwise activate a JAWS function.

My guess is it passes through the virtual page that Jaws creates and interacts with the web page. Keyboard help says it "allows it to pass through to the active application."
